When a plant adds a line, moves a machine or rebuilds one that has run for twenty years, the part of the job that decides whether it runs smoothly for the next twenty is the millwright work. It is easy to underestimate. The machine arrives, it gets set roughly where the drawing says, and production wants it running by Monday. The difference between that and an installation done by a millwright crew shows up in vibration, bearing life, coupling wear and unplanned downtime for years afterward. Here is what the work actually involves.
Rigging and setting
The job starts before the equipment is off the truck. A millwright crew plans the lift: the weight and center of gravity, the path through the building, the floor loading along that path, and the anchoring at the final position. Leveling and grouting
A machine that is not level is a machine that is fighting itself. Once the equipment is set, the crew levels it to the manufacturer's tolerance using shims and precision levels, checks it again after the anchors are torqued, and grouts the base where the design calls for it so the machine and the foundation act as one mass. This step is where a rushed install goes wrong most often, and it is invisible until the vibration readings come back high six months later.
Precision alignment
Any time a motor drives a pump, a gearbox or a fan through a coupling, the two shafts have to be aligned within a few thousandths of an inch. Misalignment is one of the leading causes of premature bearing and seal failure in rotating equipment, and it cannot be judged by eye. Pro-Line performs precision shaft alignment as part of every installation and as a standalone service when a plant is chasing vibration or repeat bearing failures on existing equipment. The alignment report becomes part of the machine's record.
Conveyors and material handling
Conveyor work is its own discipline. Belt conveyors have to be square, level and tracked over the full run or the belt walks, wears the edges and eventually tears. Roller and chain conveyors need every section aligned to the next. Pro-Line sets, aligns and commissions conveyor systems and fabricates the supports, guards, transitions and chutes that the installation almost always needs on site, because the drawing and the building rarely agree perfectly.
The mechanical work that follows
An installation does not end when the machine is bolted down. Couplings get installed and checked, guards get fitted, piping and utilities get connected, and the equipment gets run in under supervision before it is handed to production. Because Pro-Line's shop also does on-site fabrication, pipe welding and mechanical services, the same crew that set the machine can build the platform beside it, weld the process piping into it and handle the rebuild when it is due. One contractor owning the job from the truck to the first shift keeps the handoffs, and the finger-pointing, to a minimum.
Relocations and rebuilds
Moving a machine within a plant or between plants is an installation in reverse and then forward again, with the added risk of damaging equipment that has been running fine for years. A millwright crew documents the existing setup, disconnects and rigs the machine out, moves it, and resets it to the same tolerances or better. Rebuilds follow the same logic: teardown, inspection, replacement of worn components, reassembly and realignment, with the goal of a machine that runs like it did on the day it was new.

Questions plants ask before an installation
Do we need a millwright for a small machine?
The size of the machine matters less than what it does. A small pump running around the clock at high speed fails from misalignment just as surely as a large one, and it fails more often because nobody thought it needed the attention. If a shaft turns and a coupling connects it to something else, alignment is worth doing properly.
Can you work around production?
That is the normal case. Installations, relocations and alignments are scheduled for outages, weekends or off shifts, and the crew plans the sequence so the equipment that has to run keeps running. The site walk before the job is where the schedule and the access get settled.
What do you leave behind?
A machine that is set, level, anchored, aligned and run in, plus the alignment readings so the plant has a baseline for the next check. When Pro-Line also fabricated the supports, guards or piping for the job, the drawings and the material records stay with the plant as well.
What if the job is partly millwright and partly something else?
