Searches for custom metal bending usually start the same way: a part has failed, or a part never existed, and somebody needs a formed piece of steel, aluminum or stainless that fits the first time. The good news is that ordering one is simpler than most people expect. A shop that fabricates for a living can start from a print, a sketch or the broken original. What decides whether the first part fits is not the machinery. It is what you send before any metal gets cut.
What does the shop need before it can bend metal accurately?
One of three starting points, in this order of preference.
A drawing is the shortest path. If you have a print with the material spec on it, the part gets built to the print, and the print settles every argument before it starts.
A sketch with dimensions works nearly as well. Overall length, the flange heights, the angle, the material and the thickness. Hand-drawn is fine. The sketch does not have to be pretty; it has to be honest.
The broken original is a perfectly good starting point too, and it is how most job shop work actually arrives. Send a photograph of the part on the floor with a tape measure across it. A photo of the part is worth more than a paragraph describing it, and a shop that does reverse engineering can usually work back from there. Which metal should the part be bent from?
Steel, aluminum and stainless bend differently, cost differently and fail differently, and the right answer usually comes from where the part lives and what it touches. If the choice is not already settled by the print, say what the part does and where it sits, and let the shop talk you through it. When is a CAD model worth doing before the metal is cut?
When the part is still being designed, or when the failed original has failed more than once. If it has broken twice in the same place, bending an identical replacement buys you a third failure. Modeling the part first, and printing a fixture or a check piece before any steel gets cut, is cheaper than finding out on the material. That is standard practice here: the part gets modeled in CAD, checked in plastic, and then formed in metal once.
What does a bent part cost to get wrong?
The material twice, the setup twice, and the days in between. The misses are almost never the bend itself. They are a dimension measured to the wrong face, a flange that collides with something the photo did not show, or a material choice that was fine in the shop and wrong in service. Every one of those is caught by the same cheap habit: one more photograph, one more dimension, one plain sentence about what the part does.
